During today’s Nintendo Direct announcement, the studio revealed Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch.
The brief footage shown of the game during the announcement suggests that it is going to be a visually impressive title (for a Nintendo Switch Mario Tennis game, that is) that will utilize a more complex series of mechanics. Specifically, the trailer noted that players will need to pay more attention to their opponent’s shot selection and positioning in order to beat them.
Even better, Mario Tennis Aces will be the first Mario Tennis game since the Game Boy Advance Tennis titles to incorporate a story mode. As anyone who played those games – or the brilliant Switch title Golf Story – knows, these sports story modes tend to be incredibly entertaining detours from the competitive play that are loaded with creative minigames. That seems to be what this new story mode is going for, but it also seems that this particular plot might abandon the tennis academy setting of previous Mario Tennis stories in favor of something a little wackier.

Thankfully, the story mode is expected to include those wonderful boss battles from previous titles.
Regardless of the story’s setting, we’re just happy to see it return. We’re also quite thrilled to see Nintendo return to Mario Tennis so quickly after 2015’s Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was met with an overwhelmingly negative reaction. Considering that the primary criticisms of that game revolved around its lack of content and innovations, we’d say that the quick reveal of Mario Tennis Ace‘s story mode suggests that Nintendo is aware of what went wrong and is willing to fix it.
We can’t wait to get our hands on this game when it releases for Nintendo Switch sometime in the spring.
