The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery Program, popularly known as the Green Card Lottery, was introduced by the United States government to enable foreign nationals from certain countries to apply for immigration to the US. The main purpose of this program is to diversify the US population by inviting natives of those nations that do not send many immigrants to the United States.
If you meet certain requirements of the DV green card program, you are eligible to enter the lottery, which is held once every year and picks 50,000 winners at random. Applying through the lottery system increases your chances of getting a visa to legally live and work in the US.
Here are five pertinent facts you need to know about the next lottery draw, due in May 2019.
Why is the 2018 green card lottery called DV2020, and who all can enter the draw?
This year’s lottery program is known as DV2020 because that’s the year this year’s lottery winners will be able to enter the US as legal immigrants.
Anyone who was born in a qualifying country can apply, provided they meet the education or work experience requirements of the program. To be eligible, you must have either completed high school education or gained the required work experience in an eligible occupation.
Can a married person bring his or her family upon being granted the green card?
Yes, but only if the main applicant included his or her spouse and children in the application along with the required dv lottery photo. When a person wins the DV lottery and is later granted the green card, their spouse and unmarried children (younger than 21 years) also become eligible to receive permanent resident status in the US.
Why is my country not in the list of qualifying countries?
The diversity visa lottery was instituted to offer immigration opportunity to people from countries that don’t send a large number of immigrants to the US. This, by default, excludes countries from where a large number of people (50,000, to be precise) immigrated to America in the previous five years.
The qualifying list changes every year, so be sure to check the updated list to know if your country of birth is eligible for DV2020.
Is there a way to improve my chances of winning the lottery?
The DV lottery is a computerized draw. However, you can increase your chances of winning if both you and your spouse enter the lottery. Submit two separate, error-free applications to avoid rejection. Additionally, you must meet the very strict diversity visa Lottery photo requirements to qualify for the draw.
I am a non-native living in a qualifying country. Can I apply?
You can apply for the DV lottery if you were born in a qualifying country or if your spouse was born in a qualifying country or if either of your parents was born in a qualifying country (provided your parents were not permanent residents of the country of your birth at the time of your birth).
