Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave creator and star Tim Robinson acts alongside Paul Rudd in Friendship, an upcoming comedy that has just been acquired by A24. The film follows a suburban family man played by Robinson who becomes dangerously obsessed with a charming new neighbor (Rudd). Directed by Andrew DeYoung (Our Flag Means Death), Friendship officially gets a distributor after receiving glowing reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere.
Variety reports that A24, no stranger to acquiring acclaimed festival films, is set to release Friendship at some point in the future. No release date has been announced, but it’s safe to assume a late 2024 or early 2025 release window is in the cards. Friendship features Tim Robinson in his first starring role in a film, which still includes his unique penchant for awkward, cringey humor. An official synopsis is not available, but TIFF (Peter Kuplowsky) described the film as follows:
When an errant delivery pulls suburban dad Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson) into the orbit of his mysterious and charismatic new neighbour Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd), a sweet bromance seems to blossom over an innocent evening of urban exploration, punk rock, and a mutual appreciation for paleolithic antiquities. But what should have been the start of a beautiful friendship is soon waylaid as Craig’s obsessive personality begins to alienate his new pal, subsequently inducing a spiral that threatens to upend Craig’s entire life.
The Tim Robinson Era Is Here to Stay
Everything known about Friendship points to another deeply unsettling and hilarious ride from comedian Tim Robinson. Best recognized for his relentlessly cringe-inducing work on the sketch comedy show I Think You Should Leave, Robinson finally gets some time to shine on the big screen. However, Friendship is not the only upcoming project from him, as his comedy series The Chair Company was just picked up by HBO. Fans of the multi-faceted comedian will be eating well soon enough.
With Friendship being his first foray into movie-making as a star, fans likely expect it to be just the first of many for Tim Robinson. However, when he first joined the project, starring in films was not necessarily the long-term goal nor the main reason for accepting the role. When asked about his potential future in film, Robinson previously told Deadline that it was not the primary factor for joining Friendship, but he did not rule it out either.
” I think this was just the right fit for me. I was a big fan of it. I don’t think of anything like ‘I want to do more of these,’ or ‘I’m planning on doing more of these.’ If it comes to me and I read it and I want to do it, I do it, or I don’t. So it’s like I don’t have any plans, but this was something that spoke to me and I thought was funny.”
