NES Classic Edition Games

Following E3, we assumed that the next time Nintendo announced the release of a new console that they would be talking about the NX. What we got instead is…well, it’s actually pretty awesome.

Today, Nintendo revealed that they will be launching a miniature version of the original NES console (known as the NES Classic Edition) that is capable of being played on a modern television via an HDMI cable. Though not a fully-functional NES recreation capable of playing original cartridges, this mini-NES comes equipped with 30 classic NES titles, as well as a single controller, and is set to retail for $60 (an additional controller will cost $9.99).

Here’s the full list of games that come pre-installed on the miniature NES:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Double Dragon II: The Revenge
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • Final Fantasy
  • Galaga
  • Ghosts N’ Goblins
  • Gradius
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure

  • Mega Man 2
  • Metroid
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Pac-Man
  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream

  • Super C
  • Super Mario Bros.

This device is certainly an appealing proposition for those who do not own a recent Nintendo console and are unable to take advantage of the sizable back catalog available on Nintendo’s eShop and for Nintendo diehards looking to add a neat little piece of nostalgia to their entertainment center. That being said, it would be nice if the device allowed you to download additional NES games through a built-in online store.

NES Classic Edition Details

You probably thought you couldn’t be any more hyped for tomorrow’s release of the NES Classic Edition. Oh, poor sweet child of the summer. What do you know about being hyped?

In order to raise the appeal of an already tempting slice of nostalgia, Nintendo has seen fit to update their website with electronic copies of the original manuals for every game included in the NES Classic Edition.

The level of respect on display in regards to preserving the integrity of every manual is quite impressive. In fact, a statement has been added to the end of each manual identifies the replicas as being “as faithful as possible to those documents and feature a bare minimum of edits. Reference may be made to features that can’t be used in this version of the game, or the contact information may no longer be valid. Some copyright information may be out-of-date.”

There are two ways to view each instruction book. One is through the electronic form which does a nice job of condensing the need to know information about each game into a PDF format just in case you need to quickly reference some instructions in reference to the gameplay.

However, if you want the good stuff, then you need to click on the printed manual option for each instruction book. Doing so will provide you with page after glorious page of beautifully illustrated and presented NES game guides. It’s quite amazing, actually. People talk all the time about how manuals used to be so great in the day, but you really do have to flip through the electronic pages of these classic handbooks to appreciate how well-crafted they truly were.

If you’re looking for some quick recommendations, the Final FantasyStarTropics, and Super Mario Bros. 3 instruction books are all worth a full read based on their depth and artwork quality alone.

The coolest little classic console on the block got a little bit more appealing recently with the reveal that the NES Classic Edition will support several retro graphics options.

This news comes to us courtesy of Nintendo Everything, who translated an interview that Julie Gagnon (Nintendo of Canada’s communications manager) gave to a Montreal radio station. Along with the confirmation that the NES Classic Edition will support save files for every game, Gagnon also revealed that the system will include several custom display options. One of these options will even replicate the grainy looks of a classic CRT tube television.

Additionally, the NES Classic Edition will allow users to view the 30 included games in a 4:3 aspect ratio format and access a pixel perfect view that converts every pixel to a square.
